Women's Health

One of the major components in Women’s Health programmes across the UK is female contraception and sometimes access to these services can involve a long wait. At Doc Plus we can offer "See and Treat" appointments within 2 weeks.

The two most effective and most widely used methods of contraception are:

  • Intra Uterine Device – more commonly knowns as “a Coil”
  • Contraceptive Implants

In line with our “Triple A Ethos” we have tried to keep our treatments cost down and offer the most competitive prices in the local area as shown below:

IUD Coil Insertion Coil Change Coil Removal
Prices From £265 £290 £225
Prices To £385 £410
Implants Insertion Exchange Removal
£265 £345 £195

We offer a wide range of coils which come in varying sizes, with different doses of hormone (levonorgestrel) release and with different life spans. The IUD Coil can also be used to treat other genealogical conditions such as heavy periods, endometriosis, or as part of an HRT programme.

An IUD (Intrauterine Device) or coil as it is commonly known is one of the most common forms of contraception in the UK today and it has proven to be 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. It is safe to use with minimal side effects and once fitted can typically last between 5-8 years depending on the device fitted.

The insertion of an IUD is usually well tolerated by most women. Local anaesthetic may be applied to the uterine cervix prior to the insertion. Some women may experience pain and dizziness after insertion, which usually settles after resting for a short time.

As with any medical procedure there is always the risk of infection. In this case there is a very small chance of getting a pelvic infection in the first 2-4 weeks after the IUD has been inserted.

If some cases you may be required to be tested for any existing infections, including STIs before an IUD is fitted.

After the device has been fitted you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Pain or tenderness in your lower abdomen
  • A high temperature / fever
  • Abnormal or smelly vaginal discharge
  • Thrush – (There is some limited evidence that with an IUD fitted, there is an increased likelihood of getting thrush that keeps coming back.)

If you have any of the above conditions, please contact the clinic as soon as possible

Rejection / Expulsion: There is a small chance that the IUD can be rejected (expelled) by the womb or it can move (displacement). If this happens, it is normally soon after it’s been fitted. Your doctor will show you how to check that your IUD is in place.

In rare cases, an IUD can make a hole in the womb, known as a perforation, when it’s put in. This may be painful, although sometimes there may be no symptoms.

The specialist doctor at Doc Plus fitting your IUD is highly experienced, so this risk is extremely low. But call the clinic straight away if you’re feeling pain or cannot feel the threads of your IUD, as the device may need to be removed.

Ectopic Pregnancy – If the IUD fails and you become pregnant, there is a possibly of an ectopic pregnancy, where a fertilised egg develops outside the womb, usually in one of the fallopian tubes. However, it should be clear that having IUD in place does not increase your risk of ectopic pregnancy.

There are two types of IUDs that are used

Hormonal IUDs are offered by the clinic which act as contraceptives by releasing progesterone, The brands that use hormones differ in size and the level of hormone released and the duration. as an example some coils measure 28×30 mm while others measure 32×32 mm. To view the range of coils offered by the clinic please  click here.

Non-hormonal IUDs are made of copper, or they can be inert. An inert device does not have any bioactive component and is made of inert materials such as plastic or stainless steel. The preferred non hormonal coil used by the clinic is the Nova Plus T380 copper coil.

Copper IUDs are T-shaped, and the arms hold the device at the right place. This device damages the sperm and affects the motility, ensuring that they do not get to the egg. Copper is a spermicide, and the increased copper ions in the uterus can negatively affect the viability and motility of the sperm.

The procedure for insertion and removal of both types of coils is the same and both are safe effective forms of contraception.

The contraceptive implant  is a small flexible plastic rod that’s placed under the skin in your upper arm by our specialist doctor.

It releases the hormone progestogen into your bloodstream to prevent pregnancy and lasts for 3 years and is clinically proven to be > 99% effective.

Once the implant is in place, you don’t have to think about it again for 3 years, and the implant can be easily taken out if you have side effects, however you should remember that when an implant is removed your natural fertility will return very quickly. It’s very useful for women who find it difficult to remember to take a pill at the same time every day.

One of the benefits of this implant is that ii can be used for women who can’t use contraception that contains oestrogen.

For more information on the implants available form the clinic please click here.

The implant is inserted on the inside of your upper arm, and a local anaesthetic is used to numb the area prior to implantation to minimise any pain during insertion

The implant, which comes inside its own insertion device, is then inserted under your skin – it only takes a few minutes to put in and feels like having an injection. You won’t need any stitches after your implant has been fitted.

The implant works for 3 years before it needs to be replaced. You can use this method until you reach the menopause, when a woman’s monthly periods stop naturally.

The implant can be removed at any time by our specially trained doctor or nurse. It only takes a few minutes to remove, and a local anaesthetic will be used. The doctor or nurse will make a tiny cut in your skin to gently pull the implant out and will close the small incision with steristrips and cover this with a small dressing. The wound will heal itself in 7-10 days.

But please remember as soon as the implant has been removed, you’ll no longer be protected against pregnancy.
