Well Woman Clinic

Well Woman Clinic

Our Well-Woman clinic is designed to make it easier for women to access speedy diagnostic and treatment services for a range of common issues that are specifically related to those with a womb.

This service also can give a baseline health check for women who are looking ahead traying to plan the right time to have a family, looking to change career or lifestyle, or who may have some familial health history that might impact on their life plans.

Some of the main conditions we see in our clinic are listed below.

  • Period Problems – Heavy and irregular periods, infrequent or no periods, or bleeding between periods.
  • Breast Health – Breast lumps, breast pain, enlarged breasts or a change in breast shape or hardness.
  • Family Planning – Contraceptive treatments, the pill, or insertion of an implant or the coil.
  • Fertility Treatment – Difficulties with getting pregnant or miscarriage.
  • Sexual Problems – Dyspareunia (pain during sex), bleeding during or after sex, or low or high libido.
  • Infections – Pelvic inflammatory disease, vulval skin conditions and infections which can affect the cervix or vagina resulting in pain or itching.
  • Cervical Cancer Screening – All women in the UK between the ages of 25 and 64 are eligible for cervical screening to check for cervical cancer. This usually involves a smear test and in some cases an ultrasound scan. We can offer screening service to younger patients aged 18-25 if you have a family history of cancer or related gynaecological problems.
  • Menopause – Potential use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), management of other related symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, low mood, etc., which will be tailored to the specific issues experienced and their severity. This may include referral for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), use of testosterone gels (not routinely available on NHS) for low libido, scans for osteoporosis, etc.

Patients may wish to involve their husbands / partners in the discussions resulting from the outcomes of their health check and the clinic would support that.

We are committed to exceptional patient centred care at a time that suits you. We offer daytime, evening and weekend appointments for your convenience.

In most cases, you will be able to receive treatment at our clinic, however if you need a small procedure or you need specific fertility advice (IVF. etc) which requires specialist external facilities, the clinic can refer you on to a suitable private hospital or clinic, or back into the appropriate NHS service.

If you have any concerns about your health or you just want to start on a wellness monitoring program, please contact our clinic for an appointment.

The well woman service will start off with a pre-consultation patient questionnaire emailed or printed for you in order to identify areas of concern to focus on during your consultation. Your questionnaire will be evaluated prior to your consultation and a face-to-face appointment will be organised with one of our practitioners at your earliest convenience.

If a cervical smear test is indicated, it is important to refrain from having sexual intercourse for 24 hours to make sure the results are accurate. Unfortunately, we cannot do a smear test during your period as it interferes with the results. Should this occur when testing is due, we will happily re-arrange another appointment.

You should wear comfortable and flexible clothing (loose top/tracksuit/shorts) and trainers as you may be required to complete some form of exercise during your assessment, and you may also require to have a physical examination.

As long as you are not diabetic, you should not have anything to eat or drink other than water for 8–10 hours prior to your health assessment. It is advisable to continue to drink water as normal, as staying well hydrated will help you feel more comfortable, can facilitate many of the tests, and will ensure your blood results are as accurate as possible.

If you are diabetic, please continue to eat and drink as normal.

If you are pregnant, only fast if you are comfortable to do so and if there are no medical concerns in your pregnancy.

We advise you not to exercise 12-24 hours before the health assessment if possible. Exercise may affect the results of the urine analysis, body composition and blood pressure measurements.

We also recommend that you wait at least 3 months after giving blood before undertaking this health assessment.

After your consultation and when all your results are available, we will organise a follow up appointment to discuss these and give you any medical or lifestyle advice. This follow up can be either over the phone or in person to suit your availability, however if there are issues which may need further treatment or investigation, you practitioner may request a face to face appointment. This detailed feedback will allow you to optimise your current health, minimise any future medical issues and address any lifestyle choices that may be required.

Results are usually back between 2-3 days after testing, but some more specialised tests may take longer. If we have recommended any additional tests, imaging, or specialist involvement, we can arrange this for you, and it may mean you attending another medical facility in the local area for these specialist services.

Based on the outcome of the assessment and with your agreement we may issue a letter to your GP to continue care under the NHS or a direct referral to a private specialist.

Yes, we are happy for you to bring someone along, but space is limited and some of the questions and examinations can be intimate. You will need to consent to that person being present during your assessment and having access to your results.

If you have specific issues or concerns where you want to include your partner, spouse or significant other in the discussion of the test results and the next steps, the clinic is happy to accommodate this. This might be particularly helpful when discussing issues such as fertility or potential chronic illness or disease which may show on test results.

You can specify the gender of your doctor when booking your health assessment, but this may restrict the availability of appointments as we cannot guarantee that we would have the appropriate staff member with clinics at your preferred times.

Your assessment will include a certain set of standard tests. If we think, that after discussing your medical history with you at the start of the consultation, that further tests would be advisable, we will let you know, and discuss this with you. That way, your health assessment will be tailored to your individual needs.  The cost of any additional tests we recommend may be covered within your health assessment, which also includes the consultation with a doctor and the follow up appointment to discuss your results. However, if there are specialist test required this may incur additional cost which will be discussed with you prior to any tests being undertaken.

Using all the information that you have supplied to us and the results from the tests carried out, you will get an overview of your wellbeing along with advice that’s tailored to your health, your lifestyle, and your ambitions.

If you have any further questions after your health assessment and follow up, you can call the clinic and we will organise for your practitioner to talk you through any concerns you may have.
