Botulinum Toxin - Medical Treatments

Botulinum Toxin -
Medical Treatments

Our Clinic has practitioners who focus on the medical uses of Botulinum Toxin, only use Allergan products. This product is clinically approved by regulatory agencies for certain medical conditions.

Migraines
Chronic migraines are severe headaches that can make individuals sensitive to light and noise, and feel nauseous. They can last all day and occur at least every other day. Botulinum Toxin injections can lessen the effects of chronic migraines and how often they occur.

Botulinum Toxin will not cure your migraines but it aims to reduce how often you have migraine attacks and how severe they are.

In most cases it takes at least two treatment cycles before you see a discernible difference, after which you can decide if Botulinum Toxin injections are an effective treatment for you. Typically, a 30-50% reduction in how many headaches you have can be expected, which would hopefully yield improvements in your quality of life. Some people notice an improvement in their quality of life with Botulinum Toxins injections even if they don’t have a big reduction in headache days.

Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
Botulinum Toxin when used for hyperhidrosis can put a stop to excessive sweating. These injections can temporarily block nerve signals responsible for sweat glands from overproducing moisture. It is commonly used in the armpits but is useful for the hands or the groin area.

Botulinum Toxin injections are not a permanent cure and some people may get greater benefit than others. In hyperhidrosis Botulinum Toxin injections help to stop or greatly reduce the symptoms. This will usually happen within two weeks of treatment and the effects may last between six and seven months. If you find that this treatment helps you, it can be repeated on a planned basis, which will give you the greatest benefit.

Some NHS organisations offer this treatment on a limited basis where patients are allowed one or two treatments only. If you have tried this treatment and found it successful and you wish to continue, please call our clinic to make an appointment with one of our skilled practitioners.

We are committed to exceptional patient centred care at a time that suits you. We offer daytime, evening and weekend appointments for your convenience.

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
Bruxism is the medical term for unconscious teeth clenching and grinding, either while awake or asleep, which can lead to physical pain and severe dental problems. Chronic teeth grinding can also cause headaches.

The treatment involves injecting small doses of Botulinum Toxin directly into the masseter muscle (the large muscle that moves the jaw). The Botulinum Toxin weakens these muscles sufficiently to stop the involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. This significantly relaxes the muscle and reduces the wear and tear on the teeth due to grinding.

In the longer term this condition may lead to damage to the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) if the condition goes untreated. If you suffer from headaches you should see these reduced or eliminated as well. Normal facial movement, such as chewing and facial expressions, will not be affect by this treatment.

If you are affected by any of these conditions or to find out more about these services call our clinic and speak to one of our staff members.

Botulinum Toxin has several trade names, however the product that we use is the original branded product, produced  Allergan Inc. The product uses Botulinum Toxin, which is a “protein neurotoxin” which blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles, which prevents the injected muscle contracting, casing the muscles to relax and soften.

Once a drug is approved in the UK by MHRA for one medical condition, doctors are not prohibited from prescribing it for any medical issue they think it could benefit, regardless of whether it has been proven to work for that condition.

This use is often based on a thorough evaluation of the patient’s needs. Unapproved use of an approved drug is often called “off-label”, and it is common practice in medicine.

In our clinic we use Botulinum Toxin injections for the following procedures:

Approved Uses

  • Treatment of Migraines
  • Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
  • Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis) Underarms
  • Facial wrinkles such as frown lines, “crow’s feet” and forehead wrinkles.

“Off Label” Uses

  • Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis) Palms and Feet
  • Jaw Reshaping (Masseter Muscle Injections)
  • Other Facial Wrinkle Lines (Chin & Neck, Nasolabial, Vermillion Border, etc.)

If a patient develops side effects, these tend to be mild and temporary. The injections, rather than the botulinum toxin itself, cause most mild side effects. For example, a patient may occasionally bruise. If this happens, the bruising lasts about 1 week.

After receiving injections, people have experienced:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Soreness
  • Bruising
  • Mild headache (uncommon)
  • Weakness in a neighbouring muscle, leading to a temporarily droopy brow or eyelid (rare)
  • Flu like symptoms
  • Frozen muscles at the injection site and in surrounding muscles, this typically wears off in a couple of days.

Very rarely, serious problems such as blurred or double vision can happen if the area around the eyes is treated, or breathing difficulties if the neck area is injected. In these cases, you should contact your practitioner as soon as possible.

Botox® generally, takes effect in 3-5 days but it is common to not see your full and final results for 7-10 days. If you have had no improvement in the condition for which you were treated after 2 weeks, then you can call the clinic and make an appointment to see your practitioner to discuss.

It can take up to 2 weeks for the toxin to block off the nerve impulses to the muscles, it is not immediate.

How long the injections last vary from person to person as people metabolise it at different rates. There will be patients in which in lasts longer, in that 4–6-month range, or shorter, in that 2-month range. It is also common for patients being treated for the first time to notice that it may not last as long initially but may last longer after their second treatment. Everyone has a unique experience.

As with all medical treatments, our practitioners will endeavour to get you the best possible outcome and will work with you to set expectations on what can be achieve, however results cannot always be guaranteed.

If you fall into one of the following categories, we will not be able to treat you:

  • People with a current infection at the proposed injection site.
  • People who have previously had an allergic reaction to Botulinum toxin type A injections.
  • People with muscle problems or chronic diseases affecting the muscles, such as Myasthenia Gravis, Eaton Lambert syndrome.
  • Patients under the age of 18 years.
  • Women who are pregnant or breast feeding.

If you have any of the following conditions you may be able to have treatment, however the decision to treat you would be at the sole discretion of your practitioner.

  • People at risk of bleeding as there is an increased risk of bruising post procedure. These include people who have blood clotting disorders such as Haemophilia, those who are taking treatments with anticoagulant medicines such as Warfarin, Heparin, Aspirin and Anti-Inflammatory medicines. Certain herbal remedies such as Ginkgo Biloba, St John’s Wort, and Vitamin E.
  • People with excessive weakness or wasting in the muscle to be injected, such as those patients with history of Strokes or Bell’s Palsy
  • People with Chronic Breathing difficulties

It is recommended that you avoid doing any of the following after having Botulinum Toxin Injections:

  • Do not rub or massage the treated area and avoid make-up if possible.

  • Do not exercise or partake in any strenuous activity for the next 12 hours.
