Hair Loss Clinic

Hair loss is a medical condition which occurs in both men and women and it can cause significant issues for the individual resulting in a lack of confidence and low self-esteem.

There is no single cause of hair loss, it can be hereditary, due to hormonal changes, medical conditions or simply a normal part of ageing. Anyone can lose hair from their head, however, it tends to be more common in men.

Hair loss can manifest itself in many different ways, depending on what’s causing it. It can come on suddenly or gradually and affect just your scalp or your whole body.

  • Gradual thinning on the top of the head, with age.
  • Patchy areas of baldness.
  • Sudden loosening of hair which then starts to fall out.
  • Full body hair loss.
  • Gradually receding hairline, typically occurring from adolescence.

We are committed to exceptional patient centred care at a time that suits you. We offer daytime, evening and weekend appointments for your convenience.

If you are at the stage where you feel you want or need to do something about your hair loss please make an appointment to see our hair loss specialist. In some cases, early intervention may be able to prevent permanent baldness with various types of alopecia.

If you are concerned about hair loss or to find out more about this service call our clinic and speak to one of our staff members.

The most common cause of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia, also known as male and female pattern baldness.

It is hereditary, and it usually occurs gradually and in predictable patterns. However, not all cases of hair loss are caused by genetics.

Your hair loss specialist will examine your scalp and reach a diagnosis. If your hair loss is not due to pattern baldness, one of the following may apply:

  • Medical conditions such as thyroid problems, anaemia and autoimmune diseases
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy, childbirth or menopause
  • Certain medications and supplements
  • Stressful events
  • Tight hairstyles – a condition called traction alopecia
  • Nutritional deficiencies and
  • Irresistible urges to pull hair from the scalp – a condition called trichotillomania.

Hair transplants do restore thinning areas but do not stop future hair loss.

So, even though the transplanted hair will grow permanently, there is always the chance that you will continue losing your native hair.

That is why non-surgical treatments are so important and should be considered first or in conjunction with your hair transplant.

This is an autoimmune skin disease resulting in the loss of hair on the scalp and other areas of the body. This common and unpredictable disease affects around 1.7 percent of the population. With Alopecia the affected hair follicles are mistakenly attacked by the immune system, resulting in loss of hair growth. Alopecia usually starts with one or more small patches on the scalp and can in some cases lead to total hair loss.

Not all forms of alopecia can be corrected with a hair transplant, however in some circumstances the situation can be improved using a combination of medication and surgery. Your hair loss specialist will discuss the treatment options with you.

We use the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method for Hair Transplants to move healthy hair follicles from a donor area (typically the back of the head) onto a bald area.

In order to get the whole follicle along with the required glands, an advanced punch device is used, which minimises tissue trauma as well as the risk of any visible linear scarring.

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic so as to reduce downtime and leaves the patient with permanent, natural results.

If you suffer from Male or Female Pattern Baldness (Androgenic Alopecia) and are bald, or balding, with a visible scalp, then it would be beneficial for you to have a consultation, to discuss what your options might be.

During a hair transplant procedure, hair is harvested carefully with adequate spacing between harvest sites and only about 10-15% of the donor hairs are removed through a random pattern in the back of the scalp. The extracted follicles will not grow back. However, since the follicles are harvested from the area in the scalp with the densest concentration of hair, the effect is barely noticeable. The remaining hair surrounding the extracted hair is more than enough to conceal the spots.
